Dr. Seda Gürkan

Seda Gürkan is an Assistant Professor in European Approaches to Security, Diplomacy and Global Affairs at Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) in the Hague. She is also an Affiliated Fellow and Professor at the Department of Political Science and the Institute for European Studies (IEE), at Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Her teaching and research interests include EU foreign policy, European security, and diplomacy. Dr. Gürkan is the principal investigator for the EUMOTIONS project (2024-2029) and she is currently involved in two Horizon Europe projects (2022-2026), both dealing with the impact of the processes of autocratisation in the EU’s neighboring countries on the EU’s foreign policy instruments.

Dr. Jaroslaw Kantorowicz

Jaroslaw Kantorowicz is an assistant professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs and at the department of Economics (Institute of Tax Law and Economics). His broad areas of expertise include global governance, (international) political economy, institutional economics, fiscal policy, and micro-econometrics.

Dr. Valentina Carraro

Valentina is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) and the Institute of Political Science, and Deputy Coordinator of the Global Transformations and Governance Challenges (GTGC) programme. Her research interests include the governance of human rights- and violence-related challenges, global and regional human rights governance, state compliance with international law, and the use of expertise in public bodies.

Cesare Figari Barberis

Cesare is Postdoctoral Researcher at Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA). His broader research also focuses on dynamics related to Emotions, Stigma, Ideology and Self-Deception. He also has a regional specialization on the South Caucasus.

Our Interns

Antonio Bellesta- Angelaki

Research Assistant

Antonio is a first year Master’s student in the International Relations and Diplomacy advanced program at Leiden University. He previously graduated with a BA in International Studies from the same university, with a specialization in the MENA region. Antonio joined the EUmotions project in order to analyze the interplay between emotions and EU foreign policy, and reconciliate his humanities and international relations backgrounds.

George Soliman

Research Assistant

George graduated with a BA in Global Political Studies from York University in Toronto, Canada. He followed his passion to the Hague where he is now completing his advanced Master’s in International Relations and Diplomacy at Leiden University. George joined the EUMOTIONS project to learn about the crucial role of emotions in foreign policy and how perceptions can shape international relations.

Sarah Stuttaford

Research Assistant

Sarah graduated from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver with a BA in International Relations. She is currently pursuing an Advanced Master’s in International Relations and Diplomacy at Leiden University. Sarah joined the EUmotions project to further explore the intersection of emotions and multilateral communication in shaping EU foreign policy.
